With Garth Dew

Garth talked about something in our conversation called the shadow career. The idea that sometimes the work we do is a kind of displaced version of the life we actually want. A way of being close to something without quite letting ourselves have it.

It’s not laziness. It’s not even fear, exactly. It’s more like a gradual forgetting. A narrowing.

What struck me most was how ordinary the turning point was. Not a crisis. Just a question, asked quietly enough to actually land: why aren’t I the one doing this? And then slowly, experimentally, imperfectly... starting to find out.
